Vitamin B12 and its Deficiency

Vitamin B12, Cobalamin is a water-soluble vitamin, which plays an important role in the normal functioning of brain and nervous system.

Vitamin B12 is naturally manufactured by bacteria and generally found in animal products like fish, eggs, milk products, meat, liver, caviar, octopus, beef, lamb. It is not found in plant products but some may found in fortified breakfast cereals.

Vitamin B12 helps to abosrb Folic acid. It helps the body to produce energy by taking part in the formation of the blood, decreases the rate of heart disease.

The people with dietary deficiency, perinicious anemia, post-surgical malabsorption, Grave's disease and the people who use long term acid reducing drugs are at higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency as they can't absorb it from food. To these people there is a need to have vitamin B12 injections intramuscularly, which passes directly in to the blood stream and thereby stomach.

Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs in vegetarians rather than non-vegetarians because the main food sources are animal products and the babies born to vegetarians are considered at higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. So supplements or multivitamins containing vitamin B12 are obtained in the form of capsules in order to overcome the deficiency of vitamin B12.

Deficiency of vitamin B12 is more common in older people compared to younger people.

Deficiency of vitamin B12 causes damage to the brain and nervous system. It also causes depression, poor memory, psychosis, perinicious anemia which includes blood disorders, headache, skin rashes, fatigue, irritability, general muscle weakness, weight loss.
