Warning Images on Cigarette Packs to Convey Health Risks of Smoking

Among the many illicit drugs used, tobacco is one of the commonly used drug in the United States. Every one of us are aware of the harmful effects of the tobacco usage. However, many tobacco abusers neglect the dreadful consequences of smoking.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tobacco is found to be the leading cause of premature and preventable deaths in the United States. It is responsible for 443,000 deaths each year. Nearly $200 billion is spent for the medical costs and lost productivity due to tobacco addiction. In order to protect the children and American people from the dangers of tobacco use, warning images showing health risks of smoking were included on cigarette packs by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA unveiled nine images which included dead bodies, diseased lungs, rotting teeth and so on. These labels help in encouraging smokers to quit and prevent children from smoking. These labels must be shown on the cigarette packages and tobacco advertisements no later than September 2012.

These labels may be disturbing for some people. Some of the images include an image of a man smoking a cigarette through a hole in his throat, image of an open sore and stained teeth, image of a parent holding a baby as smoke drifts towards them. Some images show the link of the tobacco use to lung disease, strokes, cancer, heart disease and death. These labels will be covering the top 50 percent of the front and rear panels of the cigarette packages. They will also cover 20 percent of each advertisement. These warning signs are expected to decrease the number of smokers that saves lives and increase life expectancy.
