Four Major Types of Yoga

Yoga combines breathing, meditation and controlled postures to relieve stress and develop physical discipline. Yoga merges body, mind, and spirit. There are four major types of yoga that are very popular these days.

Kundalini yoga: Yogi Bhajan of India, brought the practice of kundalini yoga to the West in 1969. Kundalini yoga focuses on the release of dormant energy, also known as kundalini energy. Kundalini yoga employs visualizations of spiritual energy, combined with breathing techniques, in order to allow free flow of kundalini energy. For example, dormant kundalini energy is imagined as a coiled snake at the base of the spine, which can only be released by deep breathing and a strong nervous system.

Bikram yoga: Bikram yoga was founded by Bikram Choudhury. He was a gold medal Olympic weight lifter in 1963. This yoga utilizes extreme heat in order to cleanse the body of toxins and increase circulation. It is a comprehensive type of yoga that workout on all components of fitness such as muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular flexibility and weight loss. Normally bikram yoga is practiced in a heated room between 95-105 degree temperature, which enhances flexibility, detoxification, and prevention of injuries. This is the only yoga style that specializes to practice in a heated environment. This is also called as hot yoga. In this, 26 postures are designed to stretch the body in a sequence.

Hatha yoga: Santan society describes hatha yoga as, 'ha' meaning 'sun' and 'tha' meaning 'moon'. Hatha yoga is commonly translated as the yoga that brings union of the pairs of opposites. Hatha yoga is a foundation of all yoga styles. It includes postures, breathing control, and meditation. It is a complete system that can be used to achieve spirituality and self realization. It is the only form of yoga which can be learned easily. It has become very popular in America as a source of exercise and stress management.

Ashtanga yoga: This is introduced by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, in 1975. This yoga is physically demanding as it involves synchronizing breathing with progressive and continuous series of postures.
